Jesus at the gay bar poem

After ‘The Backwater Sermons’ came out, this poem from it, ‘ Jesus at the Gay Bar ’, went a bit viral, so I thought I’d share some of the basic theology behind it. The poem quite obviously riffs off of the below section of Mark 5, drawing a parallel between the unnamed woman in the passage, and queer people - more particularly, the "boy" in the poem, a young LGBT man struggling with. But in their latest album Jesus At The Gay Bar , the Brisbane group are diving into new genres such as dance music, nods to house, 2-step, and UK garage. Although veering from the sound we all know Cub Sport for, this new direction is a natural fit for the band. Nelson further explains that the band had worked on the album a lot during lockdown; they had missed the energy live shows gave them and were craving that uplifting feeling, which began the process for Jesus At The Gay Bar.

Jay is currently Poet-in-Residence at ‘The Poet’s Church’, St Giles-in-the-Fields in Central London. Writer Jay performs his poetry across the country regularly, as both stand-alone sets, and as part of larger events. The group took to the stage together for the first time in 16 years at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on July 4. Due July 25, the LP is preceded by its title song, out now, and dates back 30 years, when singer Peter Cunnah pitched the track to Kylie Minogue. Opening with the pre-release singles Always Got The Love and Replay , they demonstrate the winning formula of combining dance pop beats with the lyrical fragility of Cub Sport music past.

Jesus defies expectations and "rules" and instead provides healing and love. But, in this poem, there is no healing, Jesus states "there is nothing in this heart of yours that ever needs to be healed" Or is that not quite true?. To understand the parallel more clearly you first have to understand the context behind Mark 5. The poem portrays Jesus as someone who embraces and affirms those who have been marginalized, particularly within religious contexts.

For a society to be whole and healed, we must do what Jesus does for the ones living on the edges: call them back into relationship and listen to their whole truth. Place them at the centre. Often queer people are told they are broken and need healing. .
